Helpful details
Frequently asked questions
Where are JW SteelCrafts knives made?
Every blade is handmade in the United States. The shop forges Damascus steel in-house. No imported blanks. No factory production. Each knife and axe is shaped, ground, heat treated, and finished by a real person.
What is Damascus steel and why does the pattern vary from knife to knife?
Damascus steel is made by forge-welding layers of different steels together, then folding and twisting them into a single billet. When the blade is ground and etched, those layers reveal the distinctive wavy or swirl pattern Damascus is known for. Because the pattern is created during forging rather than applied afterward, no two blades look exactly alike. The variation is not a flaw. It is proof the steel was made by hand.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. JW SteelCrafts handles custom knife and axe orders. You can specify blade shape, handle material, size, and details. Custom work takes additional time depending on the complexity of the build. Contact the shop directly to discuss what you have in mind.
How do I care for a Damascus steel blade?
Hand wash only. Dry immediately after washing. Never put a Damascus blade in the dishwasher. Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil to the blade periodically to prevent corrosion. For high carbon Damascus, the blade can develop a patina over time with use. That is normal and protective. Store dry and keep the edge honed as needed with a stone or strop.
What is the difference between a Damascus chef knife and a standard stainless steel kitchen knife?
A Damascus chef knife combines the edge retention and toughness of layered steel with a blade that is actually handmade. Standard stainless kitchen knives are typically stamped or laser cut from a single sheet of uniform steel. A Damascus blade holds an edge longer, takes a sharper edge, and carries the visible layered patterning that proves the forging process. It also requires a little more care. No dishwasher. Dry after use. Oil occasionally. The tradeoff is a blade that performs differently and looks like nothing you can buy off a department store rack.
